What is the difference between Homework Support and Remediation?
Homework Support primarily helps fulfill a need for a dedicated time and place where a trained teacher can help students with assignments. This type of tutoring can also help students learn the skills and habits necessary to manage daily homework assignments.
There will be a small amount of drill and subject review at the beginning of each session. Parents are still required to assist with homework at home with review of basic facts, checking for completion, and exposing students to everyday mathematics such as cooking, counting money, and other similar types of activities.
Students who participate in the Remedial Tutoring must be referred by their teacher. This type of assistance will be provided to students who have a skill gap or particular difficulty with a mathematical concept and are in danger of falling below grade level.

Who is administering the program?
Second Grade Teacher Sheloham Payne will be the on-site Program Supervisor. Ms. Payne holds a BA in Child Development and an MA in Education. She is a Certified K-8 Math Specialist, has a grade 1-6 Math Credential and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, with thirteen years of experience in education from grades 2-6.
Upper Division head Angelina Arrington will be responsible for Administration. Ms. Arrington holds a BA in English and an MA in Education, along with a Professional Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She has eighteen years of experience in education from preschool to university level as a teacher, program director, educational services business owner, consultant, and school administrator.
Both will work together to identify tutoring talent from within the Faculty.
Ms. Arrington and Ms. Payne will also use their combined expertise to create a training component, which will allow us to deliver uniform instruction. This effort will aid in benchmarking both student and program progress. Over the summer, they will select and order teaching supplies and materials specifically for this program.

Who are the tutors?
Tutors will be hired from within the St. James' Faculty and Staff, insuring a solid background in the Everyday Math curriculum and knowledge of St. James' academic standards. Tutors who are Lead Classroom Teachers will not be allowed to tutor their own students.

 |
|
| |
What is the ratio of tutors to students?
Tutoring will be delivered in two ways:
1:4 ratio of tutors to students for Homework Support
1:2 ratio of tutors to students for Remediation
These tutor-to-student ratios have been proven effective in tutoring centers, such as Sylvan Learning Center, and will allow us to provide support and remediation to more students.

How do I get feedback on my child's progress?
Each tutor will contact parents directly regarding student progress either via phone, e-mail, or conference, whichever is mutually convenient. Formal progress updates will be given to both the parent and classroom teacher at three-week intervals. Parents, classroom teachers, and tutors are free to communicate informally at any time to discuss issues.

How does After School Math at St. James' compare with other outside tutoring programs?
Studies have shown that tutoring tied to the school day is more effective than tutoring programs not tied to a specific curriculum. After School Math at St. James' will be tied to the Everyday Math curriculum, allowing children to practice and reinforce what they are learning in the classroom.
Additionally, regular, high-quality small-group tutoring may be the most effective after-school activity for improving academic achievement. Tutoring from well-trained staff allows after-school programs to target students' individual strengths, weaknesses, and interests by providing direct, diagnostic mathematics instruction and mentoring.

How will the success of the program be measured?
Student academic progress and effort will be measured in the following ways:
1. Skill gaps will be pre-assessed, addressed, and re-assessed to determine progress toward the academic goal.
2. Student effort in the classroom, work habits, and organizational skills will be assessed by conversations with the classroom teachers throughout the ten-week session.
3. Student and parent satisfaction will be assessed by a brief survey distributed at the end of each session.
