Providing Service, Creating Community

Dear Fellow St. James’ Parents,

The Parent Support Fellowship (PSF) supports the community of St. James’ School by enhancing friendships among parents and strengthening relationships among parents, faculty, and administration.

Strong parent participation is part of what makes St. James’ extraordinary. Our parent body comes together with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the educational experience, create enriching opportunities, and help make the school year fun and productive.

PSF is the main avenue to parent involvement at our School.  There are volunteer opportunities to fit everyone’s schedule.  Some activities are done in a day, such as Field Day and Korean Sunday, and others, such as the Husky Highlights Newsletter and Hot Lunch, provide involvement opportunities throughout the year.

With your help, this will be a great year!

Sarah Bynum, PSF Co-Chair (Preschool Representative)
Karen Cowan, Treasurer
Hannah Choi, PSF Co-Chair
Rodney Jeffries, PSF Co-Chair
Soo Park, PSF Co-Chair
Ida Peter, PSF Co-Chair

African-American History Month (Veralyn Jones and Teresa Taylor)
Volunteers work with the Director of Upper Elementary to organize a month-long celebration, including an all-school chapel and student performances, that ties to the curriculum and educates students about African-American history.

Alumni Relations (Chair TBD)
This group supports the Advancement Office of the School by getting in contact with alumni, updating our records, and helping to organize reunions.

Annual Giving (Chris Cook)
This group supports the Advancement Office of the School by educating families about Annual Giving and encouraging them to participate. Volunteers organize Annual Giving receptions, a fall telethon, and follow-up communications.

Around-the-World Event (Chair TBD)
The Annual Around-the-World Event is designed to teach students about other countries and cultures. Parent volunteers help to organize the International Food Festival lunches and the student performances.

Art Classroom (Faith Foss)
The Art Classroom volunteers are responsible for supporting the Art Teacher by displaying our students’ creative work throughout the campus and at the annual Art Show in St. James’ Hall. Groups of volunteers prepare, matte, set up, and take down art exhibits as needed, mostly outside of class times. We also need individual art volunteers to assist the Art Teacher with hands-on projects during a two- or three-hour regular timeslot during art classes.

Art in Motion (Ana Iturralde)
The Art in Motion volunteers are responsible for creative visual art projects for the wider community including displaying the St. James’ students’ art pieces at the Bank of America in Larchmont and the St. James’ Art Walk on Saturday, March 6.

Dads’ Pancake Breakfast (Nicolas Peter and Peter Ferrera)
This group hosts an annual old-fashioned Sunday morning pancake breakfast in the Parish Hall. This gives Dads an opportunity to have fun, network, and raise money for the School. This is a one-time commitment Sunday, February 7, 2010.

Faculty Appreciation (Gretchen Kasai and Cathie White)
These volunteers host monthly buffet lunches or suppers for the faculty and staff.

Family Weekend (Jung Eun Chong, Susan Kneafsey, and Dina Phillips)
This group organizes the accommodations, meals, games, and activities at the annual Family Weekend at El Capitan Canyon, October 10-12, 2009.

Field Day (Elizabeth White)
These volunteers assist the P.E. teachers and Advancement Office with sports activities, entertainment, and refreshments for Field Day on Saturday, September 26, 2009.

Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day (Cara Esposito and Julie Hite)

Schedule

Hispanic Heritage Month (Alfonso Chavez)
Volunteers work with the Director of Upper Elementary to organize a month-long celebration, including student performances, that ties to the curriculum and educates students about Hispanic culture.

Hospitality (Stacey Lee, Lucy Norland, and Hyun Joo Shim)
This committee provides refreshments for parent gatherings including the ten Coffees with the Head, the monthly All-School Chapel services, the New Family picnic, the first day of school, and other parent gatherings. Many volunteers are needed to provide and serve refreshments.

Hospitality for Admissions (Helen Lee, Lynn Leipzig, and Yoo Mi Ok)
This committee provides refreshments for admissions events including Open Houses in the spring and fall and testing in the spring.

Hot Lunch (Karen Cowan and Nora Houndalas)
This committee organizes volunteers to serve the hot lunches to students daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We need several volunteers each day, and this is a great opportunity to meet other parents and see our students in action. You can designate the day of the week you are available to work and volunteer every week or every other week. To place an order for hot lunch, go to https://new.healthyhotlunch.com/.

Husky Highlights (Gregg Daniel and Lucy Norland)
These volunteers work with the Advancement Office to write and solicit articles, collect photos, design, and print the quarterly PSF newsletter. Whether you write professionally or just for fun, we encourage you to join this team. It is ideal for working parents since most work is done by email and phone. Click here for the most recent issue.

In-N-Out Burger Lunches (Ana Iturralde, Deborah Christian, and Molly Song)
This group acts as liaison between the School and In-N-Out Burger to order and serve these fundraising lunches. The lunches will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday October 16, November 19, January 21, February 18, April 15, and May 20. Volunteers need to commit to at least three of these dates.

Korean Parent Association (Ji Hyun Kim)
The Korean Parent Association (KPA) exists to serve Korean parents at St. James’. The group meets monthly to provide a venue for parents to learn about school events and activities. The KPA takes the lead in organizing the annual Korean Sunday event and Larchmont Fair Korean BBQ.

Korean Sunday (Ji Hyun Kim and Minsun Suh)
Korean Sunday at St. James’ is one of the highlights of the year! St. James’ Korean families share their culture with our whole community through a church service, lively music program, and festive BBQ. All are welcome to participate in decorating, preparing food, helping with children’s activities, and wearing Hanbok (traditional Korean dress). Korean Sunday will be March 14, 2010.

Larchmont Fair (Karen Cowan, Ji Hyun Kim, Kyung Suk Lee, and Louis Chung)
St. James’ hosts three booths at the annual Larchmont Fair: a Bake Sale, a Korean BBQ, and a games booth. This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to represent St. James’ to the broader Windsor Square and Hancock Park community as well as to raise funds for the School. This year, the Fair will be held on Sunday, October 25.

Media Center (Laura Riley)
This volunteer group assists the school Media Specialist in two ways: volunteers may sign up for a regular weekly time slot in which they help students check out books and shelve returned books or volunteers may assist with special events such as book dedications at the Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, and the bi-annual book fairs.

Mitzvah (Ji Hye Chung, Jennifer Kim, Shannon McIntosh, Gia Paladino-Wise, and Jody Rath)
“Mitzvah” is the Hebrew word for “good deed.” This group assists St. James’ families during challenging times such as a new baby, an illness, or death. Mitzvah can help with tasks such as transporting children to school, delivering hot meals, and arranging play dates.

Science Fair (Jessica and Tim Youd)
This group will work with the Science Teacher to help set up and dismantle the Spring Science Fair.

Spring Community Event (Cara Esposito, Julie Hite, and Amy Savagian.)
This group plans an Annual Community Event in the Spring. Sub-committees manage aspects such as invitations, publicity, promotion, catering, and logistics.

This year's Spring Community Event is St. James’ Exclusive Event at the California Science Center in Exposition Park on Sunday, May 2, 2010. Save the Date Card
