Providing Service, Creating Community

Dear Fellow St. James’ Parents,

The Parent Support Fellowship (PSF) supports the community of St. James’ School by enhancing friendships among parents and strengthening relationships among parents, faculty, and administration.

Strong parent participation is part of what makes St. James’ extraordinary. Our parent body comes together with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the educational experience, create enriching opportunities, and help make the school year fun and productive.

PSF is the main avenue to parent involvement at our School.  There are volunteer opportunities to fit everyone’s schedule.  Some activities are done in a day, such as Field Day and Korean Sunday, and others, such as the Husky Highlights Newsletter and Hot Lunch, provide involvement opportunities throughout the year.

With your help, this will be a great year!

Arts Committee (Ana Iturralde, Chair)
The Arts Committee displays of our children’s creative works throughout the campus. Volunteers assist the art teacher with installation of student art and refreshments for the Annual Art Show in spring.

Dads' Pancake Breakfast (Chair TBD)
Dads' Pancake Breakfast is an annual old-fashioned Sunday morning pancake breakfast in the Parish Hall. Which gives the Dads an opportunity to have fun, network, and raise money for the school. This is a one-time commitment on Sunday, February 22, 2009.

Faculty Appreciation (Chair TBD)
This group hosts buffet lunches for the faculty and staff. This assignment is fun for parents who like to cook.

Family Weekend (Jung Eun Chong and Susan Kneafsey, Co-Chairs)
This group runs the annual Family Weekend in October. A great opportunity to meet other St. James’ families during a fun-packed weekend at El Capitan Canyon, near Santa Barbara.

Field Day (Nancy Redford and Cathie White, Co-Chairs)
This group assists the PE teachers with sports activities and refreshments for the Field Day event on Saturday, September 20, 2008. This is a one-day event and a good volunteer opportunity for working parents.

Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day (Dina Phillips, Chair)
This group hosts our annual event to honor grandparents and special friends with a breakfast, chapel service, family photos, and classroom activities. This event requires many volunteers for the evening before and the day of the event, November 25, 2008.

Hospitality (Eunice Ha, Yoon Jung Jo, Seon Min Jung Co-Chairs)
This group provides refreshments for parent gatherings such as the monthly All-School Chapel services, the first day of school, Back-to-School night, coffees with the Head of School, and other events. Many volunteers are needed, and the time commitment depends on individual ability to participate.

Admissions Hospitality (Susan Rich and Helen Lee, Co-Chairs)
This group provides refreshments at the Admissions Open Houses held in the Fall and the applicant testing days, held in the Spring. The group serves as a welcome committee to prospective parents of St. James' and answers questions they may have about the School.

Hot Lunch (Karen Cowan and Nora Houndalas, Co-Chairs)
This group helps serve the pre-ordered hot lunches to students from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each school day. This is a great opportunity to get to know the children in your child’s class. Two volunteers are needed each day and you can designate the day of the week you are available to work.

To order or change your child's hot lunch, please visit healthyhotlunch.com.

Husky Highlights (Gregg Daniel and Julie Wagner, Co-Chairs)
This group writes and solicits articles and collects photos and calendar items to be published in the PSF newsletter. Whether you write professionally or just for fun, we encourage you to volunteer to be a member of this committee. This publication is an ideal opportunity for working parents since most work is done by email and phone.

In-N-Out Burger (Deborah Christian and Elizabeth White, Co-Chairs)
This group orders and serves the In-N-Out Burger lunches. These are fundraisers that will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the following Thursdays: 10/23/08, 11/20/08, 1/15/09, 2/19/09, 3/19/09, and 5/21/09. Volunteers need to commit to at least three of these dates.

Korean Parent Association (Hannah Choi, Chair)
The Korean Parent Association (KPA) exists to serve Korean parents at St. James'. The group meets monthly to provide a venue for parents to learn about school events and activities. The KPA takes the lead in organizing the annual Korean Sunday event and Larchmont Fair Korean BBQ.

Korean Sunday (KPA)
Korean Sunday at St. James’ is one of the highlights of the year! St. James’ Korean families share their culture with our whole community through a lively music program and festive lunch on February 8, 2009. All are welcome to participate in decorating, preparing food, helping with children’s activities, and wearing Hanbok (classical Korean dress).

Larchmont Fair (Karen Cowan, KPA, and Julie & James Wagner, Co-Chairs)
St. James’ hosts three booths at the annual Larchmont Fair – a Bake Sale, a Game, and a Korean BBQ. This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to represent St. James’ to the broader Windsor Square/Hancock Park community as well as to raise funds. The Fair will be held Sunday, October 26, 2008.

Media Center/Library Parent (Sheila Lane, Chair)
This group assists the school Media Specialist and staff with processing materials, reading to children, shelving books, the fall and spring Book Fairs, and book dedications. This is an enriching opportunity for parents who can only donate a few hours a month.

Mitzvah/Good Deeds (Joy McManus and Gia Paladino-Wise, Chair)
“Mitzvah” is the Hebrew word for “good deed”. This group assists St. James’ families during challenging times such as a new baby, an illness, or death. Mitzvah can help with transportation to school, delivering a hot meal, arranging play dates, and other activities according to the families’ needs.

Science Fair (Chair TBD)
This group will work with the Science Teacher to help set up and dismantle the Spring Science Fair.

St. James' Boutique (Susan Kim, Teresa Taylor, and Crystal Yang, Co-Chairs)
This committee works with the Advancement Office to identify and order St. James' School branded items such as mugs, bumper stickers, and sweatshirts, and to sell these to raise money for the School at key events such as Field Day and Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day. The team will also create a catalog of St. James' items for parents, alumni, and friends of St. James' to order throughout the year.

Uniform Closet (Constance Hornig and Ji Hyun Kim, Co-Chairs)
The Uniform Committee collects, cleans, sorts and sells used Dennis uniforms to raise money for PSF, save money for parents, and teach children that Reuse is an environmentally friendly option. The Committee keeps the uniform closet in order on a regular basis for daily sales and organizes racks for occaisonional event sales, such as back-to-school night. Members also launder and sort abandoned clothing from the Lost and Found table.

If you would like to purchase gently worn Dennis uniforms at bargain prices, check out the closet in St. James' Hall and drop off payment in the office (checks or exact change are appreciated).

Village Family Association (Chair TBD)
Embracing the African tenet, "It takes a village to raise a child," the Village Family Association (VFA) addresses the needs of the School's richly diverse community. The VFA serves as a cultural and social resource for African-American and Latino families. Volunteers work with the Director of Upper Elementary to organize events such as Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and family movie nights.

To volunteer to work with any of the PSF committees, please contact the Advancement Office at advancement@sjsla.org.
