This past January, our current Head of School Debbi David announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2018. We can't thank Mrs. David enough for all the amazing work she has done growing St. James' School during her tenure here: our school is robustly enrolled, in the middle of a transformative capital campaign, and has added many programs which benefit each and every child entrusted to our care. We wish Debbi the very best as she moves into retirement after a tremendous half century career in education.
Together with Debbi, our Board of Trustees has set about planning carefully for our school's next chapter. To help find a head of school capable of following in Debbi’s footsteps, the Board of Trustees has tapped Resource Group 175 as our search firm. Our two consultants are Tom Hudnut and Doreen Oleson, both of whom are significant figures in independent and Episcopalian schools here in Los Angeles. Mr. Hudnut was the head of Harvard-Westlake School for 25 years and Dr. Oleson recently served on the St. James' accreditation team in addition to heading St. Mark's in Altadena for 25 years.
In late January, Tom and Doreen visited St. James’ over a two day period and met with every constituency at St. James’: from students to faculty to parents. These meetings helped them create the following search profile.
Working in concert with Debbi David and Bishop Catherine Roskam, Bishop-in-charge of St. James’ in the City, the Board of Trustees has also appointed a search committee. Our ten member committee draws equally from the many constituencies and stakeholders at St. James' Episcopal.
Over the next several months our search firm will gather a pool of qualified candidates. In late summer, the search committee, working with our consultants, will select semifinalists for initial interviews. In early fall, the search committee will narrow the list of semifinalists to a few finalists who will each visit the campus for a few days. During their visit faculty, students, parents and members of the larger campus community will be invited to meet with the finalists and offer feedback.
Following these finalist visits, the search committee will submit the name of the finalist to the Board of Trustees for selection as the next head of St. James’ Episcopal School.
Thank you for your interest and support as we celebrate and build on Debbi David's legacy in our quest for the next leader of St. James' Episcopal.
The Head of School Search Committee met for the first time on March 14 2017. Our Search Consultants explained their role in helping us gather and vet qualified applicants for St. James’s next Head of School. They stressed the need for the names of applicants and their application status to be kept confidential until the final public phase of the search when the finalists visit campus in September and October 2017. Between now and the summer, our consultants are busy gathering the names of applicants and potential applicants. If you know someone who might be interested, please encourage them to take a look at the search's position statement and contact the search consultants directly. Contact information for the search consultants is in the position statement.
Our next meeting will take place over the Summer when we will work with our consultants to select and interview semi-finalists. After the semi-finalist stage, we will will enter the final, public phase of search when two to three finalists will each visit St. James’ for two days. These visits will occur in September and October 2017.
In September Wiliam Walton announced the search had narrowed to two finalists. Those finalists will make visits September 24-26 and October 1-3. The school will host Open Community Meetings on September 25 and October 2 at 6pm in Parish Hall to ask questions and hear from the finalists in person.
