At St. James' we hope to inspire and nurture our students to become people who think critically and act compassionately.

Above all else, we hope we hope to inspire in children a curiosity and a yearning to learn every day. We maintain high academic standards throughout the elementary school and recognize the many different ways children learn. Our classrooms at St. James' are joyful, rigorous, and creative, and instruction is based on using what we know to be best practices for young children. Teachers use whole-class instruction, small-group lessons, and individual instruction – depending on content and the understanding of the subject matter at hand. Additionally, our curriculum describes the many ways we encourage children to be the best they can be and how we integrate subjects in meaningful ways. We foster in children a sense of individuality and simultaneously help them learn to be a part of a larger community, too.

Our teachers set high standards for themselves and their students, yet maintain a safe environment enabling children to feel comfortable in learning from their mistakes. In each classroom, we strive to build self-confident, self-reliant, and self-disciplined students.

Elementary Philosophy

From the moment the children arrive, we work in partnership with their parents to create a safe and stimulating environment for them. We help children express their own ideas; we give them the tools to build skills in navigating childhood social relationships. Critical thinkers graduate from St. James' and go on to make significant contributions to our communities, locally and globally.

Elementary Curriculum

The curriculum is comprised of language arts – which includes specific study in reading, vocabulary, spelling, and English – social studies and mathematics. Adding to the rigor and the breadth of a St. James' education are our specialty classes, which include science, visual art, technology, library and media studies, music, physical education and health, religion, and Spanish.

Technology integration contributes to the success of our academic program, and we use tools like Walltalkers™, interactive projectors, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers to bring greater access to information and to assist students in organizing, creating, and presenting what they have learned in a variety of formats.

Equally important in the St. James' experience is creating an environment where our students are encouraged to value community service, cultural diversity, ethics, and strong moral values. Further, we nurture our students' spiritual development through weekly chapel services and religion classes that focus on building a personal relationship with God and respecting and learning about how others in our community and around the world do the same.

At St. James' our curriculum strives to strike a balance between hard work, fun, caring for others, and global awareness. We acknowledge learning as a lifelong process, and we believe that our program will prepare our students to make significant contributions to creating a very bright future for our communities.
