New Year’s Message
from Carol A. Swainson, Associate Head of School.
“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke
Happy New Year! New beginnings are gifts to us all. From the sunrise each morning, the start of the school year, birthdays, commencements, and more, we all enjoy an opportunity to make today and this year better than the last.
Educational research has identified human connection and friendship as a powerful motivator for people to challenge themselves to achieve more than they could in isolation. At St. James’, we are fortunate to be a part of a dynamic and diverse community that cares. No wonder our students rise to amazing heights.
Brain research has also revealed that practicing gratitude increases your happiness. This is particularly important since happy children are ready to learn.
Since the beginning of the year, I have wanted to share the documentary On the Way to School with you. It is a tremendous film in which rural children in four different countries courageously trek to school to attain their education. Watching this international film may help you and your children to begin practicing gratitude and enhance your appreciation of friendship and community.
Together, let’s have the happiest new year ever, and please allow me to express how grateful I am that you are all a part of the St. James’ community.
All the best for a fantastic 2016!
