Director of Admission Joan Hester to Depart at End of School Year

by Head of School Deborah David

Hester_Joan_300w.jpgJoan Hester arrived at St. James’ four years ago, following the school’s decline in enrollment from 2009–2011. Quiet, thoughtful, and fortified by years of experience in enrollment and admission activities in independent schools, Joan set about creating systems and procedures that would serve this school well and provide a steady stream of customers anxious to fill our classes. Under her directorship we produced newly branded application materials and information brochures. She wrote our first official viewbook and organized open houses for applicant families that have become legendary across the city.

As a colleague, Joan is without peer. Her work sets a high standard of excellence on the administrative team. Organized and visionary, she understands the role of data and can organize her factual information in compelling and meaningful ways, giving us new insights into the efficacy of the advertising we do, the outreach we need, and the new directions we should pursue. Her thinking is logical, her spirit collegial, and her interventions into heated discussions conciliatory and effective.

Full of fun and a great dancer, Joan is the warm heart of every party. And so it was no surprise that she participated so wholeheartedly in the celebration of the Anglican Church’s 125th anniversary with Father Koh and me in Seoul last fall. Joan loved the culture, the food, the people we met, and the ceremonies we attended. Bitten by “the Korea bug,” she even told me she thought she could live there quite happily.  And so she shall.

Joan Hester has been appointed the Director of Admission for the 1,400-student Seoul Foreign School and will begin her work there on July 1, 2016. She is a loss to us, but her appointment reminds us that we now operate on the level of the world’s largest and most successful schools. Her talents have been recognized and her work here validated by this appointment. She has grown a truly world-class set of skills here at St. James’, and now she will display them on the world stage. We will miss her, but Joan has established policies and procedures that will ensure the future success of admissions at St. James’ for years to come. Her assistant Kimberly James plans to stay with us and will be an integral part of the team that selects our next admission director. And Joan Hester will be part of the St. James’ family forever.  Bon voyage, Joan!
