Read the Committee’s Letter

Dear Parents,

We are pleased to announce that our annual, three-day Around the World festival will take place this year on March 9, 10, and 11. This is our opportunity to share and celebrate the cultural diversity of the St. James' community, and we're very exited to be able to bring it to you again.

We will celebrate the Americas and Asia on Wednesday, and on Thursday, we will celebrate Africa, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific. On Friday, the three-day celebration will culminate in an All-School Assembly with performances by all K–6 classes, representing a wide variety of regions.

In addition to the work that the students are doing, we will celebrate on Wednesday and Thursday (not Friday) with our traditional Food Fair, which will feed students an international "tasting" lunch. The food served each day will be themed around that day's geographical focus.

The event is coordinated by the Parent Association and our Food Fair chairs, Joanne Gratiot, Ceclila Lopez, Alexandra Kazhokin, and Erika Quinn. We invite you to sign up at sjsla.org/atw to treat us to your own international specialties. We ask that you submit the online form no later than Friday, March 4, so that we can plan appropriately.

In volunteering to provide food for the Food Fair, please keep the following in mind:

  • Please provide at least three-dozen moderate servings.
  • Foods MUST NOT CONTAIN NUTS, and any other potential allergens should be listed on a card or label that can be posted with the food.
  • On the day of the Food Fair, you may bring your item to drop-off, where it will be taken by volunteers, or you may bring the food to St. James' Hall at 11:00 a.m. (NB: If food must be dropped off early, please note that there is no refrigeration available.)
  • Do bring along any necessary serving utensils!
  • We encourage you to stick around for the fair and serve your food (or arrange for someone else to do so).
  • Leftovers should be taken home or left as a donation to the St. James' Soup Kitchen.
  • You will likely hear from your Class Parent to ask if you'd like to volunteer to help make this event a success.

Please note that regular Healthy Hot Lunch has been canceled for March 9 and 10. If you think your child may not enjoy the international food offered, please send him or her to school with a sack lunch. You can contact Mrs. Gratiot at jgratiot@kpmg.com or Mrs. Lopez at delcarmen78@yahoo.com with any Food Fair questions you might have.

We look forward to seeing you at our Around the World celebration, and thank you, in advance, for helping to make this a wonderful event that represents the breadth and depth of the diversity of our community.

Sincerely,

Mr. Brian Duggan
on behalf of the Around the World Committee

Fourth Annual JAMES® Awards for 5th Grade Writing

Who needs the Academy Awards? At St. James’, our students are celebrating each other’s writing ability and creativity in their own way.

In February, the 5th grade’s focus on creative writing culminated in the Fourth Annual JAMES® Awards for 5th Grade Writing. Each student planned, wrote, revised, and edited a story and presented it to the other class for critique and judging. Superlatives were presented in each class in the categories of Dialogue, Description, Beginning, Conflict, Climax & Ending, Protagonist, Antagonist, and Overall. Congratulations to all the winners!

A complete list of accolades is available in this blog post.

Leadership Program Reusable Tote Bags

A group of Leadership Program students is working to reduce the use of plastic and other disposable bags, which cause pollution and death to all nature, animals, and people. By encouraging the use of durable, reusable bags, we can reduce the amount of trash we produce.

As part of this effort, they are selling reusable Metro Shopping Tote Bags that feature the St. James’ husky logo. The bags are blue and black and are generously proportioned at 15” x 13” x 10”. They even feature an extra pocket on the front!

Each bag is only $5. You can order yours online now!

Proceeds will benefit the St. James’ Episcopal Church food ministries, as well as the Leadership Program's project to provide care packages to Shriners Children's Hospital. Not only will you be helping our environment; you will also be supporting the work of our student leaders, the missions of the church, and the whole of the St. James’ community!

Lent Soup Cups

As you know, the Lenten season began on Wednesday, February 10. Tradition holds that we are to “give up” something for Lent as we look to simplify our lives and focus own on renewing our spiritual relationships. At St. James’, we have taken the tradition in slightly different direction, as we focus not only on ourselves, but also on the needs of others.

During our Ash Wednesday All-School Chapel service, Mrs. David talked about that tradition: the Lent Soup Cups. Yesterday, your student brought home one of those cups. The idea is that instead of giving up one particular thing, we look for opportunities to give up different things while thinking of others. In other words, if a student has money to spend on a treat, like candy or a snack, instead of spending that money on himself or herself, he or she would put the money in the cup, thinking about those who are not as fortunate as we, who do not have extra money to spend on “treats.” This also gives students the chance to reflect on what we have and to focus on the many ways to help others. Added up over time, the cup has the potential to be filled with quite a bit of money, which will then go to help the food ministries of our parish, the Soup Kitchen and the Food Pantry.

Please talk to your students about the cup and listen to what they have to say about what it means. Also, please be sure the younger ones understand that they are to give the money, not the actual treat itself. Our first year, we had a few cups come back filled with gummy bears. While cute as all get-out, that’s not really practical. We are asking that the cups be returned by Friday, March 18.

Many thanks to you for your help and support. Have a blessed Lenten season as we look forward to the promise of Easter. If you have any questions, please contact Service Learning Program Coordinator Rob Krueger.

Keeping Healthy: Reminders from Nurse Basham

Medication
The school MUST have written authorization from a parent or guardian to administer any prescription medication while at school. The medication must be in its original container labeled by the pharmacy. The label must include name of student, name of drug, directions concerning dosage, time of day to be taken, name of prescribing physician, and date of prescription. Medications should be brought to the Health Room by an adult, not a child. A prescribed asthma inhaler may be kept by the student and self-administered only if the physician indicates this need in writing and considers the student capable of doing so. The School Nurse will administer over-the-counter medication if written parental permission has been given.

Remember the 24-hour Rule!
Students may return to school after the following:

  • 24 hours without temperature (and without taking fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Advil/Motrin)
  • 24 hours without nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (and tolerating a normal diet)
  • 24 hours after receiving medication (such as antibiotics, eye ointments)

If your child still seems tired, pale, with little appetite, not tolerating solid foods, and generally "not him/herself," please do not send them to school. Some viral illnesses may take longer before your child is well enough to return to school.
