A Question of Height
by Physical Education Teacher Nick DiPasquale
The has been a wave of discussion recently regarding the appropriate height of the basketball rim for children in the 4th–6th grades. Is it best for kids to learn to shoot on a standard 10-foot rim? Or is it perhaps more beneficial to use progressive basket heights that correspond to age groupings?
I, of course, have my own personal beliefs on the subject (which I'll expound in a moment), but such a question is perhaps most appropriately answered by the renowned American Sport Education Program (ASEP).
Very Special Author Visit on Tuesday
Our very own 2nd-grade teacher Jonathan Dar will take center stage in St. James’ Hall on Tuesday, May 24, from 1:30–2:00 p.m. and share details about his new book, The Colorful Life of Roy G. Biv, with our Kindergarten through 3rd-grade students.
About the Author
Jonathan Dar is a 2nd grade teacher here at St. James'. He loves to draw pictures and tell stories. He also loves to teach. He believes that learning can be fun, exploratory, and memorable through creative storytelling.
About the Book
Roy G. Biv is the tale of a cowboy whose name is like the colors of the rainbow. R stands for red, O for orange, Y for yellow, G for green, B for blue, I for indigo, and V for violet. Roy G. Biv experiences ups and downs in his life. By the conclusion of the story, however, he finds that there really is gold at the end of the rainbow.

Ms. Jun Departs for South Korea
Friday, May 20, was Sharon Jun’s final day at St. James’, after serving three years as a play facilitator and the science classroom assistant. Community Security Manager Byron Zapata said of Ms. Jun, “She has been dependable, professional, and great to get along with; she will be missed by parents, students, and colleagues alike.” Ms. Jun has taken an exciting opportunity to move to South Korea to teach English.
We apologize that the news was not announced sooner, but the school had very little advance notice of Ms. Jun’s departure. We wish her all the best in taking this new path and thank her for her diligent and capable service to the school.
Huskies Shut Out TIOH 3–0 in Volleyball Contest
Great news coming off the volleyball court this past Monday at St. James’, where the Huskies hosted Temple Israel of Hollywood. With 6 players and no subs, St. James’ met TIOH head-on! Even after a slow start, St. James’ won the first game 25–9, proving that all the hard work during practice was paying off. The second game was a bit more challenging, but the Huskies triumphed again, 25–13, winning the match.
We played a final game for fun, so that everyone could get more playing time. St. James’ won this final game 25–12. During that game, the players were encouraged to touch the ball two times before sending it over on a third hit.
Congrats, Huskies! This is great practice for our rematch against the Center for Early Education in a couple weeks. Get ready to work! We are so proud.
