St. James’ Announces New 6th Grade Teacher for 2016–2017
We are excited to announce the newest addition to the St. James’ family, Hillary Rodgers, who will be joining us in August as the successor to the beloved Ruby Dummett. Though Mrs. Dummett will leave behind a large pair of shoes to fill, we believe Ms. Rodgers will be more than up to the task!
An experienced elementary teacher, Hillary comes to St. James’ from St. Paul, Minn., where her classroom responsibilities ran the gamut from reading, writing, and language arts to mathematics and science. Well versed and accomplished in differentiated instruction techniques, Hillary is committed “to educating each and every child to the best of [her] abilities, achieving equity in the classroom, and increasing the learning of all students.”
Her dedication to elementary education dates back at least to college; Hillary graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and two state teaching certifications for students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. She has also received a Master of Arts in educational leadership from St. Mary’s University in Minneapolis, earning a 4.0 grade-point average and completing thesis research on the topic “Increasing the Use of Culturally Responsive and Equity Focused Teaching Strategies.” She has put all of this study to impressive use in the classroom, implementing research-based, technology-infused pedagogy. Hillary says about her work, “It is extremely important to me to create classrooms where all students have access to rigorous content that they can see themselves in and that is relevant to their lives.”
Hillary has also proven to be a leader among her fellow educators, serving in previous posts as a parent educator and a member of school- and district-level leadership teams implementing professional development programs.
When she visited campus for interviews and a sample lesson, faculty and students alike were impressed not only by her keen intellect and obvious teaching acumen, but also by her warm and engaging personality and her easy rapport with both adults and children.
We hope that you are as excited as we are to welcome Hillary Rodgers to campus in the fall.
Immunizations Required for 2016–2017 Academic Year
A reminder to all parents that beginning with the coming academic year, the State of California will no longer offer Personal Belief Exemptions as an alternative to the required immunizations. The California School Immunization Law requires that children be up to date on their immunizations (shots) to attend school. Diseases like measles spread quickly, so children need to be protected before they enter. California schools are required to check immunization records. Contact Nurse Kelly Basham with any questions you may have.

St. James’ Takes 2nd Place in Hollywood–Wilshire Volleyball League
The much-anticipated volleyball match of St. James’ vs. the Center for Early Education happened at the CEE gym on Tuesday. Both teams were tied for first place going into the match. The Huskies were excited and raring to go but started slow, losing the first game 25–14. The second game was filled with some nail-biting rallies from both teams, but CEE again came out on top 25–19, claiming victory in the match. We played a third, friendly game, which was also very close and had some great plays. The Center eked out a final victory 15–13.
Coaches Matthew, Jenn, and Jacs are very proud of their Huskies for how much they've improved and for their good sportsmanship! We are sad to see our 6th-graders go, but we look forward to building our team again next September!

St. James’ 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-graders Show Their Skills at Talent Show II: The Variety Show
On Thursday, the full K–6 student body gathered in St. James’ Hall for the second of the school’s two annual talent shows. While Talent Show I, which took place in January, is a more formal and serious recital, Talent Show II is a raucous and at times hilarious variety show. This year’s event featured an opening number encouraging the whole audience to get into the act, singling along to “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from Disney’s The Lion King, followed by 13 student acts ranging from ballet and modern dance performances to lip-sync battles between animal onesie–wearing 4th-graders and science-themed parodies of hit songs.
The full list of acts is below:

- Billy and Stephen performing a scene from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton

Students Jump to Raise Funds for St. Jacques in Haiti
On Friday, St. James’ K–6 students took an hour out of their regular day for an awesome cause: to raise funds to help feel the students at our sister school, St. Jacques, in Haiti. Parents and others sponsored jumpers at a recommended $25 each; each $25 donation will provide the school’s 200 students with their daily meal. Classes jumped in this “jump-a-thon” from 1:30–2:30 p.m.
At last count, $4,705 had been raised – enough to provide St. Jacques students with more than 188 days of meals. Thanks to everyone who contributed. If you didn't have the chance, the online form is open until 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
