New Dance Instructor to Join St. James’ Faculty This Fall
As she announced at the Night of the Arts Concert in May, St. James’ dance instructor, Laurel Butler, will be departing at the end of this year to become the director of the Visual and Performing Arts Education program at the University of California, Los Angeles. Laurel’s contributions to the St. James’ dance program have been unparalleled; her creativity, her intelligence, and her unique ability to merge the academic with the kinesthetic have left a legacy here that will not soon be forgotten. We are so thankful for the time we shared with Laurel, and we wish her well at UCLA.
Talking the helm of this one-of-a-kind program will be Sarah Jacobs. Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree in dance from Carleton College with a focus on choreography, performance, critical pedagogy, and community arts. Since then, she has been certified as a somatic movement educator by the School for Body Mind Centering in North Carolina and is completing her Masters of Fine Arts in world arts and cultures with a focus in dance-theater from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has engaged in and led professional development at conferences and festivals around the world.
On top of her academic credentials, Sarah is also an accomplished performer and choreographer, with dozens of credits to her name. She has served as the co-chair of the dance department at the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists; taught fellow educators how to integrate movement into their classrooms at the Perpich Center for Arts Education; and has been a teaching assistant and instructor with the UCLA departments of visual and performing arts education and world arts and culture.
We’re so thankful to have found someone so accomplished and talented to carry the St. James’ dance program’s momentum forward. Welcome, Sarah!

5th Grade Presidential Fair Showcases Student Learning in Social Studies
On Wednesday morning, Mr. Krueger’s 5th-grade class held the third annual Presidential Fair in the school courtyard. Students were able to see the work of our last trimester President Project, which consists of two parts: a research paper and a timeline. Students in Mr. Krueger’s class chose a president to research, given specific criteria, and then presented that information in both formats. At the Fair, other students going to and from recess were able to stop by and see the research papers and timelines and ask the students about their work. The 5th-graders were very proud to show off their hard work!

The event featured a delicious menu of Jamaican cuisine (chosen in honor of retiring faculty member Ruby Dummett) as well as a live performance by several student musicians and the entire 6th-grade class, who sang “When We Began,” a rewrite of Adele’s “When We Were Young” dedicated to Mrs. Dummett. Following the live performance, the event concluded with a video of the 6th-graders sharing their favorite St. James’ memories and then a slideshow tracing their growth from Kindergarten through the present.

Immunizations Required for 2016–2017 Academic Year
A reminder to all parents that beginning with the coming academic year, the State of California will no longer offer Personal Belief Exemptions as an alternative to the required immunizations. The California School Immunization Law requires that children be up to date on their immunizations (shots) to attend school. Diseases like measles spread quickly, so children need to be protected before they enter. California schools are required to check immunization records. Contact Nurse Kelly Basham with any questions you may have.

The beginnings of next year’s calendar are available here. Holidays, breaks, days off, testing days, and other landmark days for the coming year are listed; additional information will be added periodically throughout the remainder of the year. The online calendars have also been updated with the same information.
