St. James’ Episcopal School strives to educate the whole child: heart, mind, and spirit. We work to bring out the best in our students - socially as well as academically, and to help them identify their individual purpose in the service of others.
The school uniform plays a significant role in shaping our students’ approach to learning at St. James’. It fosters a sense of belonging within a supportive community, and it instills a seriousness of purpose in academic work. Perhaps most importantly, the uniform frees students from the distraction of fashion consciousness. Rather than feeling pressured to adhere to arbitrary fashion trends, students remain free to define themselves and their peers according to individual character and academic achievement. Learning remains at the heart of the matter.
We have begun the process of evaluating our current uniform code as well as assessing school-wide adherence to individual guidelines. We will have a revised uniform code for the 2019-2020 academic year, and we will give each family ample notification before new apparel is purchased in August.
For the remainder of this current school year, we respectfully remind all parents of the following guidelines:
Sweatshirts, jackets, and sweaters must be school uniform (including Catalina Island Marine Institute sweatshirt and those sold by the Parent Association.)
Shorts are to be worn under skirts.
Shoes are to be worn for athletic activity. White, black, blue, and gray are permissible colors.
Socks must be solid in color, in white, blue, black, or gray. Ankle or knee socks only.
Tights must be navy blue.
Headbands should be low-profile, without pom-poms or (dangerous) cat ears.
Jewelry is discouraged; dangling earrings and necklaces are prohibited.
