- 2018 S.T.E.A.M. Fair

The St. James’ S.T.E.A.M. Fair is an event with a long-standing tradition that has evolved to give students an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and interest in all S.T.E.A.M. fields. We are calling all inventors, explorers, scientists, engineers, biologists, chemists, physicists, and mathematicians to participate by investigating scientific phenomena and conducting an experiment in order to present your findings at our annual S.T.E.A.M. Fair on Wednesday, May 30th from 6 pm to 7 pm.

Student-Driven Scientific Investigation:  Project ideas should come from the students. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. For young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the students are able to call the project their own. The vast majority of work on the S.T.E.A.M. Fair will be completed in class, although students are of course allowed to work on their laboratories and experiments at home under the supervision of their parents as well.

Partners: Students may work with another St. James’ student in their class. If students would like to collaborate with a sibling they may but will still be required to submit two separate lab reports that are grade level appropriate or advanced to ensure all students involved in the study are challenged to the best of their ability. There is a maximum of three students per project, but it is preferred that students work in groups of two. If students would like to work in groups of three, they must all contribute equally to the investigation and study.

Topics: When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, try the Science Buddies website (http://www.sciencebuddies.org) to get some ideas.

Judging and Awards: Our S.T.E.A.M. Fair is non-competitive, as our goal is simply to encourage scientific exploration and promote a deep, lifelong passion for science. Each participant will display his or her project to teachers, classmates, and parents during the evening of the Science Fair. Participation in the S.T.E.A.M. Fair is mandatory for fourth and sixth graders, and each fourth and sixth grade student will receive a grade according to the grading rubric (see enclosed).

Volunteers Needed! A big event like the S.T.E.A.M. Fair would not be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. We especially need help with the setup and cleanup, so if you think you could spare an hour or two, we would love your help. Please contact Mr. Marcoulides at amarcoulides@sjsla.org to sign up!

- Father Rowins Scholarship

The Father Rowins Scholarship Fund was originally created to help provide financial support for current St. James’ families who have fallen on difficult times financially. Whether a spouse has lost his/her job, or their business has closed, or a family has suffered other financial hardships, these one-time gifts of financial support help St. James’ families continue attending the school. Current St. James’ families are encouraged to apply for a gift from the Father Rowins Fund. If you have received a scholarship gift from the Father Rowins Fund in the past, you are not eligible to apply. If you are applying for Tuition Assistance from St. James’ for the 2018-2019 school year, please contact Najah Lowe (NLowe@SJSLA.org) in the Business Office to discuss your eligibility to apply for scholarship fund support.

Please complete the application (download here) and return it to the front desk lock box by the close of business on Friday, May 11th.

If you have any questions, please contact Najah Lowe (NLowe@SJSLA.org).
