- Community Meeting - 11/29

On November 29 6:30-8:00pm in Parish Hall we invite the St. James' Community for an important meeting on the future of the Mr. Pizza Parking Lot (the parking lot across from St. James' on the East side of St. Andrews Pl.). The meeting will include Debbi David, and the Board of Trustees. This is an opportunity to express your concerns and hear about the future of St. James'. We'll see you there!

- December Dates

Just a reminder that as previously announced, we will extend the instructional days in December through December 15th, two days after the Christmas Pageant, in order to make up some of the time lost due to construction this past fall.  Dismissal for Christmas vacation will now be at noon on December 15th.

Because we announced this at the end of the summer, and we realize some families had already made travel reservations, we will not count absences on December 14th and 15th.  If you wish to start your vacation on December 13th following the pageant, you may do so; but if you wish to take advantage of the additional instructional days, you may also do that.

Please note that all classroom Christmas parties, including the annual visit from Santa Clause, will take place on Friday morning, December 15th and not prior to the pageant.

- Kelli Chau hired as Kindergarten Teacher

Dearest ever-patient Kindergarten parents,

You have heard the old saw about "finding the bluebird of happiness right there in your own backyard?"  Well, allow me to introduce to you the beautiful and talented bluebird in our very own St. James' backyard: Kelli Hidemi Kuramoto Chau...and she will be your new Kindergarten Co-teacher starting on November 27th, 2017.

A St. James' employee for the past 14 years, Kelli has evolved from an 18 year-old neophyte just embarking on an associate's degree, to a mature and capable young woman with a great depth of understanding about primary age children.  Her roots in the world of independent school education go deep, and teaching is embedded in her DNA.  Her aunt Nancy Vermette is a remarkably imaginative and loving Kindergarten teacher here at St. James'.  Kelli served as Mrs. Vermette's assistant here for nine years, absorbing skills and understandings far beyond those that an graduate school education could hope to provide.  Her mother, Alice Kuramoto, is a pillar of our faculty, anchoring the 3rd grade here for many years with her unshakable calm and unconditional acceptance of every child; and Kelli's younger sister Lindsey Kuramoto has held down the assistant teacher position in Mei-Ling Leonard's 1st Grade classroom or two years.  We have quite literally watched Kelli Chau morph from teenager to seasoned professional, spreading her wings as she acquired an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education.  Then, as she worked to complete her Masters in Early Childhood Education from Pacific Oaks College, she soared through the CBEST, the CSET, and the RICA on her way to her multi-subject teaching credential.  Mrs. Chau is more than ready for her first full-fledged teaching assignment.

Along the way, Kelli has taught in our After School Enrichment program specializing in papier maché, clay creations, and ceramics.  In the St. James' summer school she has taught beginning and intermediate volleyball and basketball.  She has also coached boys' volleyball for the San Gabriel Valley Boys Volleyball Club and at South Pasadena High School she coached J.V. volleyball.  Her friends and family describe her as a successful leader but also a skilled and loyal team member; highly organized and a multi-tasker; a strong communicator; and a highly professional, hard working, all-round good colleague of the highest caliber.

Kelli Chau's is a true all-American tale of relentless hard work, perseverance, and integrity.  A fourth generation Japanese-American, Kelli has added her Chinese-American husband to the robust Kuramoto-Vermette clan and to our St. James' community.  And we are so happy that in accepting our offer of full-time teaching, our own Kelli Chau has committed to remain a long-time member of the culturally diverse and tightly knit St. James' family.  How fortunate the children of our Kindergarten will be to have KelliChau teaching them, along with the stalwart and tireless Eura Lim, and encouraging those little fledglings of yours to take to the skies... and fly.

Have a restful and joyful Thanksgiving weekend.   See you bright and early next Monday!

Gratefully,
Debbi David
