Dear Members of the St. James’ Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I’m pleased to announce that Mr. Peter Reinke will succeed Debbi David as our next Head of School on July 1, 2018. Mr. Reinke was the unanimous choice of our Search Committee and our Board of Trustees.
Mr. Reinke is currently Assistant Head at the Buckley School. Mr. Reinke came to Buckley in 2013 after a 17 year tenure at Head-Royce School in Oakland. During his time as Assistant Head of Buckley School, Mr. Reinke has worked closely with the Head of School James Busby and the Buckley Board of Trustees in spearheading an extensive K-12 curriculum initiative to embrace 21st Century teaching and learning.
Mr. Reinke’s appointment caps an exhaustive nationwide search process that began ten months ago when Head of School Debbi David announced her intent to retire at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. With the help of our search consultants Tom Hudnut and Doreen Oleson of RG175, we interviewed a number of strong candidates and were blessed to invite two exceptionally well-qualified finalists to visit our campus over the last two weeks. Mr. Reinke’s knowledge of the intricacies of the Los Angeles independent school community and his enthusiasm for our community and mission at St. James’ made it apparent that he was the natural and best fit for our school.
In addition to his professional tenure at Buckley and Head-Royce, Mr. Reinke has also served as a founding trustee of Vincent Academy, a K-5 charter school in Oakland and also a public trustee of the California State Teacher Retirement System. A native of Massachusetts, Mr. Reinke holds an undergraduate degree from Brown University and a graduate degree from Teacher’s College at Columbia University. A lifelong Episcopalian, Mr. Reinke serves as Senior Warden of Church of the Advent and also a lay Eucharistic Minister.
The Board is indebted to the hard work of our ten search committee members and also the support and assistance of Bishop Catherine Roskam, Bishop-in-Charge of St. James’ Episcopal Church and Stephen Yeazell, the Senior Warden. Most of all, though, we are grateful for the energy, enthusiasm and frankness of many individual members of our community—from students to parents, faculty to staff, trustees to parishioners—who took time to meet our candidates and share feedback with our search that made it clear that Mr. Reinke is the perfect fit to lead our kind, caring and lovingly diverse community. In Mr. Reinke’s own words,
I am enormously impressed with the St. James' community. The students are thoughtful, community minded and communicative, and there is a keen sense of generosity of spirit and love of teaching among the faculty. Perhaps most striking to me is the almost fifty year relationship between a vital educational institution and a dedicated Episcopal church family which brings such wonderful opportunity for collaboration on conversations around ethics, compassion and spirituality—and positions St. James’ for an always ever deeper engagement with Los Angeles.
We’re excited to have Mr. Reinke joining our family. He will assume the position of our Head of School on July 1, 2018.
William L. Walton, Ed.D.
