St. James’ vibrant culture and full roster of annual community events are possible in large part because of our parent body’s tremendous support and involvement. Throughout the year, parents and family members partake in an ever-expanding panoply of opportunities to enrich school life through contributions of time, talent, and resources.
The Parent Association organizes and coordinates parent involvement at all levels. Working closely with the Advancement Office, the P.A. keeps the parent body informed of goings-on in the community and ways to get involved, such as volunteer needs, social “friend-raising” events for St. James’ families, and opportunities for meaningful giving. All parents and guardians of St. James’ students – from preschool through 6th grade – are part of the P.A.
Types of Involvement
When it comes to ways that family members can contribute to school life, you name it! Because St. James’ hosts such a wide array of festivities, assemblies, and other special events, involvement can take virtually whatever form is most convenient and enjoyable to parents and families. Volunteers regularly help with serving hot lunches and maintaining the school’s lost-and-found. For volunteers whose availability is less regular, special events offer a chance to get involved in exciting ways. Examples include the very popular In-N-Out lunches; African-American Heritage Month festivities in February; and the Around the World Festival, during which students in every class give musical performances and enjoy cuisines from diverse countries and cultures.
St. James’ benefits greatly not only from volunteer staffing but also from skills-based volunteering; parents and family members contribute their talents in photography, music, cooking, teaching, and more. By contributing their time and talents, our fantastic volunteers help to keep St. James’ annual tuition among the lowest of comparable schools in Los Angeles.
